Flexible spaces for a new way of living
This Spanish Mission style apartment bordering the Yarra River is in an idyllic position. However, the late 1920s apartment was certainly in a dire state, with the rear half coming away and the premier aspect, overlooking the river and the property’s established Peppercorn tree, was not appropriately framed.

Innovative. Adaptable. Flexibility.
One of the new and innovative additions made was a flexible space adjacent to the new galley-style kitchen. Complete with an operable bookshelf that defines one edge and can be moved to meet the interior wall (to allow for additional space in the living/dining area), this ingenious space also has a demountable built-in desk and a concealed bed that than be pulled out when needed. A sliding door to the kitchen, hidden in a cavity wall, can create a fully enclosed bedroom.
The West Hawthorn apartment retains all its charm, with its brick fireplace and Jazz Moderne-style rosettes. However, it now offers a standard of accommodation that is also comfortable to live in, and also gives the flexibility the client was seeking. It can be a two-bedroom residence or alternatively one bedroom with a study/bedroom. When this home office/bedroom isn’t being used, the kitchen and living area can be expanded to be ‘read’ as one. And the picturesque peppercorn tree can still provide an important aspect for the apartment, while continuing to diffuse the afternoon western sunlight.
